Overview

Programme :
Construction of a building with laboratories, animal laboratories, and offices for the Institut du Cerveau et de la Moelle Épinière (Brain and Spinal Cord Institute). The Institut du Cerveau et de la Moelle Épinière is a research institute created to bring together public and private research teams. Its mission is to ensure a constant dialogue between core research and patients. It is located at the very heart of the hospital where neurology was founded. The programme includes laboratories, an animal laboratory, dedicated patient spaces, a human imaging area, meeting spaces, and a business incubator.
The laboratories are located on the upper floors, suspended above the others as a symbol of how much the Institute values these activities.
On the second floor there is a business incubator with the same layout as the research spaces. A sort of base has been created to provide continuity between the ICM and the future endocrinology building. It houses the cellular imaging platform as well as a logistics area. Between this base and the upper laboratories there are two floors which include the reception, the meeting centre and its amphitheatre, and the administrative offices.
The dedicated patient spaces for consultations and clinical trials are located on the first floor. A concrete post and beam system gives the building flexibility. The largely glass facade brings in natural light; the first two floors have a tinted-glazed curtain wall. The four floors of the modular laboratories are clad in glass elements; the central building has a classic curtain wall facade.
A "fifth facade" in lacquered metal cladding with aluminium grilles encloses the roof-top mechanicals. The walls of the mechanical room are metal slats, a visual extension of the brises-soleils; this makes it possible to integrate the different ventilation grills and acoustical baffles for the air conditioning equipment.
